The Universe O friend and companion of night, thou who rejoicest in the baying of dogs and spilt blood, who wanderest in the midst of shades among the tombs, who longest for blood and bringest terror to mortals, Gorgo, Mormo, thousand-faced moon, look favourably on my sacrifices! Mythology

If you're looking for the Charlie Stross blog, then click here.

This website is basically a vanity project that seeks to establish some kind of basis for the Cthulhu mythos, and to gather together all things Lovecraft. Why? Why not, after all, everyone needs a hobby, even Pickman. Apparently, a hobby helps to keeps one sane, and sanity while somewhat overrated in the pedestrian scheme of things, makes living in this world somewhat easier than otherwise.

So then to begin, I am 52 years old which is 3.8411 x 10 -7% the age of the universe. I work in the TV Broadcast Industry, in a fairly technical capacity, mainly being concerned with the best way to encode TV programmes and films for distribution on satellite and terrestrial systems as well as internet based streaming and Video On Demand (VOD).

The important thing to remember about this kind of thing that is it's all about capacity.

These days TV stations tend to broadcast 24x7, so converting programmes to broadcast format while about designing the right format for the station playout system, is also about being able to do it fast enough to keep well ahead of the queue given you're looking at multiple channels needing 24 hours of material a day. Yes, we're talking Profile Design and Workflow!!

Still, be that as it may, and the squamous tenticaled horrors of management aside, while I think it's interesting, it's not what you're here for. So let's talk about the Cthulhu Mythos and not big TV company management.

Lovecraft tells us we are not the first sentient beings to inhabit this earth. Given that the earth is 4.54 ± 0.05 billion years old, this is not, on the face of it, an unreasonable position.

The earliest discovered evidence for life on earth suggests that life originated at least 3.5 billion years ago (that is a mere 23% of the present age of the earth, taking the Principle of Mediocrity to beyond its rightful limit this suggests life in the universe at large first began at approximately 3.17 billion years, over 10 billion years ago...) and that given humanity has risen from a species of plains ape to technology users in a mere 200,000 years. There has been time for many civilizations to rise and fall only to be entirely erased by continental drift, leaving no evidence of their prior dominion.

But we're not talking about mere civilizations, and let's be clear about this, we're talking about, for want of a better word, evolutions. Beings or entities with radically different evolutionary histories to our own. Things strange to our preceptions, which we can barely imagine and which are heirs to an earth that is not ours.

For the religiously inclined, it's a common misconception to believe that the universe began in light, with all the theological implications that portends for those keen on what I like to call "folk theology".

If you are ever to apprehend some smattering of the truth behind the universe in which we live that you should understand that the universe was born in darkness, and that light only came afterwards as a successor to the primal darkness and as it's bastard younger half brother.

As has been revealed by our scientists, the universe didn't become transparent to light until 380,000 years after its creation and until then was a dark place that didn't permit the passage of light. Out of this primal darkness at the dawn of time itself came our Lords Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep and a host of lesser entities, lesser entities and vastly greater entities of whom it is unloreful to speak and whom continue to exist in the echos of the Cosmic Microwave Background.

Deep Time

Modern science has established, after a long and complex history of developments, the age of the Earth at around 4.54 billion years. It's difficult to understand what this means. In these days of financial crash, and the supra-wealthy, we humans tend to throw the term "billions" around with little appreciation of the implications of the term, even less for time than for money.

One of the more illustrative concepts as regards deep time, is to imagine the universe began at 00:00, midnight and that the current age of the universe is one day.
